Winner Ericsson Frontier

PowerClinical's medical handheld software, Healthspring, has been shortlisted as a finalist for the 2003 Ericsson Frontier Developer Contest.

PowerClinical Healthspring is an innovative clinical application using handheld computers, operating over a wireless network that gives doctors and other clinicians access to real-time patient and clinical information from the patient bedside. Using inexpensive handheld computers, clinicians can do so much more at the point of care by accessing meaningful patient information from the hospital's diverse computer systems.

Healthspring functions include: listing patients, accessing patient records, enter observations, ordering tests, viewing results, prescribing medications and writing referrals & discharge letters

Lisa Tuffs Business Development Manager for Ericsson says the standard of entries was very high with more than 90% of applications commercially ready for market.

Most entrants also provided additional support documentation which outlined business and commercial models.

Seventy per cent of entries received are for business and enterprise use and this is consistent with growth we are seeing in areas such as mobile office automation, logistics and procurement applications, Tuffs says.

More than half of entries received were customized or generic end-user applications.

Dr Wilton Braund PowerClinical director Dr Wilton Braund said, As a clinician myself, I am especially interested in putting IT directly into clinicians' hands to assist work flow and improve productivity.

Desktop computer technology does not suit the roving clinician, and has introduced certain artificial restraints in their work process. Clinical observations scribbled on bits of paper are often lost, and re-entering results is simply doubling up on the use of expensive clinical resource.

Healthspring allows clinicians to return to a more natural and streamlined workflow, which fits in with the clinical process.
